Indonesia Independence Day

Merdeka…!!! Merdeka…!!! Merdeka…!!! (Merdeka = freedom)

Today, 61 years ago Mr. Soekarno (our first president) was proclaimed our independence day. That was an important day for our country.

Here is a short history about my country about it:

The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan’s surrender on 17 August, 1945. However, it took four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony on 27 December, 1949. Indonesians commemorate the date that Independence was proclaimed with nationwide celebrations. -from http://www.gts-translation.com/ndependenceDayIndonesiaholiday.asp
