Ultimate Ubuntu Dapper Look Like OSX
Customize your Ubuntu Dapper desktop!
Gnome desktop has Icons, Controls and Window decoration, which you can modify. You can get a very nice desktop by changing them. You can find a lot of themes at Gnome-look. You can view my contribution on Gnome-look too. My nickname is cak3p
Changing themes and icons
You should download these following themes from Gnome-look.
T-ish for Clearlooks for window theme and control by Tmilovan.
T-ish for Clearlooks
Downloads: 14587
Humanoid-OSX window border by SineDie.
Humanoid OSX
Downloads: 11987
If you cannot find Humanoid-OSX anymore, you can download from these.
Humanoid OSX from me
Downloads: 8144
OSX Iconset that has a lot of OSX style icons by Kiddo.
OSX Iconset
Downloads: 13371
After you have downloaded these packages please do these following steps:
- Go to “System -> Preferences -> Theme”. System menu can be found at the left upper corner of your screen.
- Select “Install Theme…” and browse to the folder where you just downloaded packages above.
- Select T-ish for Clearlooks package and continue. Now the theme manager installs the theme files so that they can be used.
- Repeat the same actions to the Humanoid-OSX and OSX iconset package.
- Select T-ish from theme list.
- Select Theme Details. Select Tish for Controls, Humanoid-OSX for Windows Border, OSX for Icons and click “Close”. Now you should have a new theme with new icons.
Metacity button position
You can change metacity window button position (minimize, maximize, close) from the right position as Ubuntu Dapper default position to the left position like window of OSX
![]()
- Go to “Applications -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor” or using the “run program” action or a terminal, start gconf by typing: “gconf-editor” (without quote) and hitting enter. This program is a bit like the registry editor for windows.
- In the tree on the left you need to go to “/apps/metacity/general/”. There is then a key in the right pane called “button_layout“.
- edit this key so that it reads: “menu:minimize, maximize, close” to “close, minimize, maximize:menu” or “close, maximize, minimize:menu“. Feel free to make your own choice.

Wallpaper
You can change Ubuntu’s wallpaper by clicking right mouse button on your desktop and selecting “Change Desktop Background” from the pop-up menu. Now you should see the background selector. You can add new wallpapers to the list simply by clicking “Add wallpaper” button and browsing to the folder where you keep your wallpaper images. You can download OSX looking wallpaper from lxvweb or you can go to deviantART to get a lot of beautiful wallpaper ;).
Fonts
You can view how to install and configure Mac Font on Ubuntu Dapper at my previous post.

Uhuy! Emang Ubuntu “linux yang mengerti anda” :P. Cuma sayangnya, kadang - kadang hasil modifikasi kita (khususnya GUI user) suka ‘break’ kalo diupgrade
If you had used Kubuntu (or simply installed KDE on Ubuntu via Synaptic or Aptitude), you could get a much better osx look - even with one menu at the top of the screen, which changes for each app, just like the real OS X does.
Then again, I ditched my Ubuntu boxen for a MacBook Pro and an Intel Hackintosh… why fight with Linux?
For Kubuntu or KDE lover you could install baghira, which a much better osx look. One installation and “bingo”; your Kubuntu will look like osx, but for Gnome lover we didn’t have a similar application like this
Correct me if I wrong. So it’s just an alternative tips to make our ubuntu to look like osx. Thanks a bunch…
I just don’t get why many people love Mac OSX’s Gui.
thanks god I don’t need to have my computer be like Mac OSX, because I have it…
Macs are over-rated. The UI looks like my sons kiddie laptop that teaches him how to spell. Macs suck, quit wasting my time by forcing me to express my opinion.
Harhar that’s a tad gross.
I switched from OS X Tiger to Ubuntu and found the new brown look a welcome change after using the OS for so many years. I got sick of that carbon look, nothing ‘brushed’ should be on the desktop and FFS hasn’t the world seen enough blue on the desktop?.
Sure, this tute has merit because it proves the customiseability of Ubuntu, one of the reasons I switched. Why fight with trying to make a home out of OS X? OS X is for robots with no desire to be human.
I tried this out and have put up a screenshot on my flickr collection. See here:

I have never used a Mac (not that i intend to), but this is the closest i feel i got - a good fun feel
Thanks. It has also giv en me some good ideas.
I have ubuntu, and i was always looking for a cool firefox skin or firefox theme whatever you wanna call it
I found these great themes that will fit perfectly with you computer if you want to give a mac-ish style to your Firefox. Here they are:
>
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2014/
http://webether.com/macfox/
i used them with Firefox in ubuntu…
hope you like ‘em
Thanks for your info
Hey its awesome man!!! It looks very good now :), just like OSX
I like your idea, and the screen shots are awesome. Can you post a LivePC version so we can all instantly try it out? If you don’t know what I am talking about, check out http://www.moka5.com/livepc. I’d like to be able to take my mac-esque environment anywhere on a USB key.
Hi PortablePopper,
Thanks for your info. I did not know about this before. I will try to make it. Wish me luck…
Hi,
I like mac os theme on ubuntu. Thanks for the stuff. Everything else except my scroll bar on my terminal window is not in mac style. I see no difference on my scroll bar btw ubuntu and mac theme.
Any idea how to fix this.
Thanks
Venu
heyas all.
my 40 gig drive is going to good use now. I have installed UBUNTU and have ordered KUBUNTU.
I dont know how to install the driver for my ati radeon 9600xt.
Actually i dont know if i am meant to be downloading and installing XFREE86 or the XORG version of the driver. I am downloading them both but i dont know how to do anything in Linux really.
I dont know where I am meant to set up my modem or set up a net account. (no INETWIZ.EXE)
So yeah, can someone help me out with getting my ATI driver installed?
and does anyone know of a good long PDF file i can read and wrap my brain around.
I’m still a Windows user, but I want to use Linux as much as possible.
Thanks.
How to Read OSX Partition on Ubuntu?
now install beryl and kiba-dock for the finishing touches

I am a Mac user just beginning to get into XP and Ubuntu… I welcome the refreshing look of Human but would also like to try to make Ubuntu look like Mac OS X.
My question is, can I easily switch between themes, Human & OS X , or am I stuck?
Sorry for such a n00b question!
do you know where i can found mac icons for linux like those on the macmenu??
bluetooth
audio
spotlight
etc etc
Thanks for the great tutorial.
I would like a skin for Mac OS X look like Ubuntu rather than Ubuntu looking like Mac OS X. And, of course, with multiple desktops !
this looks NOTHING like mac os x. It’s a lot easier turning KDE into mac os but you also need beryl and you’ll have to deal with all the problems that come from that. But with a little bit of work it works very well and brought a smile on my face. Beryl to me is like candy to a little kid…
@some dude,
If you had read to the third sentence at the top:
“Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 uses Gnome as it’s desktop environment”
The title of the page has Ubuntu and not Kubuntu. Standard Ubuntu is GNOME - has been since Warty.
I would like a skin for Mac OS X look like Ubuntu
People would pay tribute to GUI developpers (most of the time volunteers); therefore I think that making-up Ubuntu to look like Mac Osx or any other OS is kind of insult, though it may sound fun ( I personnally like Mac)
